What's with them, anyway?
I have a weird admiration for people who the social norm considers "geeky." And I'm not talking about this fad of cool geeky people who wear oversized glasses and collect comic books and play Katamari (Ok I just described myself, except for I don't collect comic books.) I'm talking about the genuine geeks. The old reebok tennis shoes, one of their old high school shirts, almost baggy (but not too baggy) jeans with the fringed bottoms because they wear them so much, hair is just as it was when they woke up (also as when they were 12), glasses genuinely because they're blind without them, old backpack with just as many pockets as there are keychains clanking around.
THAT kind of geek. Mad respect
(Weird how Animal Collective's "my girls" comes on and all I hear is "I don't mean to seem like I care about materials things like a social status.")
Back to the admiration. I feel like they are the only ones who have not enslaved themselves to the approval of others. They can wear whatever they want and act however they want and we just go "fuckin' geeks" AND THAT'S IT! No more than THAT! They go completely under the radar.
Imagine the release of pressure from society when you go UNDER the radar, the criticism, the judging. Sometimes I want to be less recognized. And the irony is that it is COMPLETELY my fault that I am noticed. I have subjected myself to this daily reality of judgement.
There is no real way to end this, mostly because I have no conclusion or resolution. It was just a weird thought that took its own path and turned into a rant that can now maybe make someone else think.
Oe maybe not....

Hearing a lot about this lately.
Can this become a new form of expression?? If so, COUNT ME IN! I WANT A WHOLE GIANT PIE PIECE OF THIS!! I'm imagining light posts and street signs COVERED in yarn! is it really considered violating property? it didn't damage anything...
hhhmmmm.... stay tuned for a whole bunch more of this because I kind of have a feeling it's in the air now...

Where did she come from?
I have come to realize a couple things in the past couple weeks:
1. I am so observant of human emotion that I forget to feel them sometimes.
2. I LOVE BUSTA RHYMES!
3. I have an obsession with jazzy tones (i knew this already from my Regina Spektor binge a couple years back)
4. I get chills every time I see Karmin do Busta Rhymes' part in this song.

Now what do we do?
I'ts a full-proof system Apple's got here. Nobody's going to give up their status iPhone and these workers will still get paid close to $8 a DAY for sometimes close to 98 hours a month just to survive in the 24-people dorm rooms provided by the Foxconn.
Full-proof.
Who wants a droid anyway?

I know it's 10 minutes long, but it's well worth your time.
Chappelle has horribly spot on insight.
Two cool things that have almost nothing to do with each other
1. The Big Picture
i dont know... what do i think? I think that the child's mind is a giant sponge at this point in their life and they WILL absorb anything that is given to them. They will also absorb the information or the task as if it was the norm because they don't know any better. So these parents decided to route these kids into strict discipline and long hours of practice and here is the fruit of their labor. I'll tell you one thing: the television was NOT their babysitter.
Now You Know.
Super awesome place to get all your news needs in LOTS AND LOTS of pictures!!

But it's a bit peculiar to think about the amount of money needed to construct this city and then why it was placed in the area it was:
See that little green spot? Yea, it's right there. Right next to.... wait a minute!! Oil money created a city sustained completely by renewable resources?

Time Bankcrupt
I have no time for anything, but then find myself having too much time. It's a weird state I am in
Finished my 20-page paper though... Round two of revisions and then ONE MORE TIME AROUND until the final draft...
anyway, this is what i've been thinking about lately:
Anytime you find yourself in a situation where a friend, family member, ANYONE is coming to you for a problem, it is very important to ask that person how they feel about the given situation. This question is so loaded that it usually presses the person to really figure out their emotion on the subject.
Usually, the emotion roots back to fear... fear of SOMETHING that ended up turning into sadness, anger, embarrassment, humiliation...
what are you afraid of?? When you can help someone figure that out, you can help them resolve their own problem...
It also helps that person walk through their own emotion instead of just sitting there and listening to you trying to make up some superficial way to make them feel better... SOMETIMES all they need is a person to just listen.
On that note, egging the person on in their story does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the other person... it usually ends up with a giant instigated response that leaves the person more mad, sad, embarrassed, etc.
EXAMPLE:
scene: Betty comes to you when she found out her boyfriend MIGHT be cheating on her.
Betty: Holy fuck I just read through Jon's texts and there's this girl that keeps texting him everyday, all day and i KNOW he's cheating on me.
You: WHAT THE FUCK!! Fuck Jon!! He's an asshole!! Who is this girl?? let's get her number out of his phone and call that bitch out!! COME ON!
Betty: YEA!!!
exit scene with pitchforks and gloves on
don't deny it... you've been THAT friend before.
Now You Know.

I'm back!
I took a tiny hiatus to focus on my 20-page paper. However, the hardest part (research and rough draft) is finished so I found some time for my own thoughts once again!
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
WOAH! that is some deep ass shit! haha but really. Marinate in that for awhile. Is this true?
Is it truly a habit of the "do-gooders" and the "changers" to always be nagging?
AM I ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!?
self-reflect, my friends.... self-reflect.

Ok let's try this out: Nuclear 101
So I've been greatly petrified by nuclear energy since I studied about the explosion in Chernobyl in 1986. We'll get to that exact subject later, but let's talk about what's happening now...
So let's start here....
Japan and it's nuclear power plants:
Japan has (had) some pretty reputable nuclear power plants in their country. However, the plants were not built to withstand such an intense earthquake as the one on March 11, 2011. So the nuclear power plants exploded and now radiation is flying through the air, crossing through to other countries and eventually reaching the United States (because I know a lot of you wouldn't care AS MUCH if you thought it was just in Europe). So now Japanese citizens are given iodine pills just in case they are exposed to the radioactivity. Although these iodine pills are a sorry attempt to resolving this issue, the people are literally terrified for their lives because of what they know: radioactivity has done horrific things to another group of people... and not long ago....
Russia and Chernobyl: 1986
What- Nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Russia explodes in the spring of 1986, spreading radioactivity across Europe. TO THIS DAY, children are still suffering the consequences of this explosion.
Radioactivity is invisible. You do not know it's there. The soldiers sent out to clean up the mess all died horrible deaths due to their exposure to radiation at the power plant site. I mean HORRIBLE deaths.
Sources: Huffington Post
So let's just be a little more aware of what a nuclear power plant really is. And now when money-hungry big-business goblins tell you that nuclear energy is the safest and cleanest way to go, you can just point them in the direction of Chernobyl and Japan and tell them you've been told otherwise.
So here you are, ladies and gentlemen!! Now you can't say you didn't know.
because.....
Now You know. Nuclear is Naughty.

Russia and Chernobyl: 1986
WARNING: GRAPHIC! I did not watch the video so I do not know how graphic it will be. I do know, however, how deformed these poor children are because of other documentaries I've watched so I can't get myself to watch it again. But if you want, it is here. And there are plenty of amazing documentaries on this subject.

Good read:
Voices From Chernobyl
EXCELLENT READ. First hand accounts about what happened on that day and thereafter. Stories are sad and courageous and ironic all at the same time. It's a quick read because it is written conversationally since the entire books is comprised of interviews. If you really want to know how bad radiation is, this book will let you know quick and easy.
So now we are aware of two things:
1. Chernobyl became a prime example of the downfalls of nuclear energy.
2. Japan just made us realize that we did not learn our lesson the first time.
But do we all know how many nuclear power plants we have here in the United States? Do we also know whether or not these can withstand an earthquake the size of the one that hit Japan?
First question: How many in the US?
The closest one to us (here in Southern California) is in San Onofre, California. And just in California alone there are 5 nuclear power plants!
(Clarification: 2 power plants are in operation in California)
(Clarification: 2 power plants are in operation in California)
America in total = 104 nuclear power reactors.
And let's be clear here: It is not the earthquake that caused the explosions. It was the lack of power needed to keep the reactors from overheating. Water is constantly flowing over the fuel rods to keep them cool. So once that stops, the power plant will EXPLODE. And Japan's power plants were initially built to withstand an earthquake just the way the ones in America CLAIM to have been built.

Where are we?
Did this really just happen 2 days ago? I feel like we watch so many end-of-the-world movies that now this looks just like a movie. Like we're just sitting at home and enjoying the special effects. This is the most eerie video I have seen yet. The reason for the eeriness of the video is the almost pure silence. There aren't news reporters or first-hand accounts. It's the way it would be if you were standing on the roof of a building, overlooking what mother earth had just done.
The part that really hit home for me was 0:49.... The minivan's windshield wipers are still on!! Therefore, the car is still on. This happened so quick, I don't even know if the person in that car had gotten out!! Oh my god, where are we? Is this really happening??
Mother nature is just as evil as any one person. She kills mercilessly with no guilt or conscious. But this term "evil" was not created by mother nature. It was created by man. We are the ones who make conscious actions. We are alone in that aspect. We are living in a world that does not think farther than JUST BEING. Yet we can think far past that and become aware of the fact that things like this happen.
To nature, this isn't sad. To nature, this isn't happy. To nature, this just IS. It just IS WHAT IT IS.
Now You Know. Nature reached Nirvana.

Thank you National Geographic. You have FINALLY put into perspective what has been on my mind for years now!

OK OK HERE I AM!!
Ok so I promised a hybrid of the two themes i discussed in my last (last) blog. So here I am to explain that process.
We live in a consumer-based society and I don't think enough people realize the power the consumer has over the market. IT IS NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. For some reason we have been tricked into believing that we are the enslavement of the business. In actuality, we are the leaders of the business. We are the ones who demand products, therefore helping any given business to succeed.
Ex: If nobody drank milk, the milk industry would go under. Correct? Who else would fund the business other than the people demanding the product?
So the women in the suffrage movement performed hunger strikes and the blacks in the South performed sit-ins. One was a hhhuuuggee sacrifice, while the latter crunched the economy so much that businesses were forced to change their laws and finally desegregate their companies.
Now people always complain about stuff... Just stuff in general. But nothing is done to fix it. We've become huge complainers.
I am giving everyone here an easy way to help fix the problems...
POINT: If you do not agree with something, don't fund it.
what i'm saying is: BOYCOTT! Boycott everything!! Anything that is on your supermarket shelves that you do not agree with, DO NOT BUY IT! It really is as simple as that. Let everyone else you know around you why you do not buy it and encourage them not to buy it either.
My general list of boycotts:
1. Most things Made in China (although I do buy used goods since it already made itself into the demand pool by someone else)
2. Wal-Mart ( watch Wal-Mart: High Cost of Low Prices)
3. Plastic Bottles (Watch Tapped)
4. McDonalds (or any other fast food for that matter)
5. Most meat (I say MOST because I am not against eating meat, I'm just against the industrialization of the process our meat goes through now, thus making it a non-enjoyable experience.)
6. Milk (read here)
Among a great deal of other things.
And I know I am only one person, so what can I do, right? I think that is the most dangerous way to think. It is also the ideology that keeps us in this vicious circle of problems we complain about everyday and do nothing about.
Ok so that's my general manifestation on the subject. Expect random posts on what I boycott and why you should, too.
Now You Know. Take back your rights.
3/4/11
I know, I know....
I'm supposed to be writing about my hybrid of the two themes i discussed yesterday... But, instead I'm choosing to read about the Columbia University uprising because it's COOOOOOOOL (and it's part of my thesis).
So to keep you guys occupied until tomorrow, CHECK THIS OUT!!
So to keep you guys occupied until tomorrow, CHECK THIS OUT!!
ZOMBIES!!! REAL ZOMBIES!!
Zombie fungi take control of ants and lead them to wherever the fungi wants to go and then kills the ant and grows from its brain!! AAAANNDDD there's FOUR of these fungi species and they all target a certain kind of ant!! SO CRAZY!!
seriously, why does television spend so much time and money making shit up when THE REAL WORLD is so much more interesting!!
and another thing: people get paid to figure this kind of stuff out!?!? SERIOUSLY?!?! wtf! mind=blown.
My brothers and I always discuss what we would do if zombies attack. If we could kill each other if it got to that point. Whether we would want to be surprised of the attack or fully prepared.
Maybe we will be attacked in our lifetime!! This is so cool!!
Now You Know. (Everything except what I promised)

Hybrid: Hunger strike, meet Consumerism.
Some may call it boycott: You don't buy goods from a certain store to show your disapproval of their style of business.
I have been "boycotting" Wal-Mart for about three years now.
My friends find it as a running joke "HEY ANGELA! YOU CAN FIND THAT CHEAPER AT WAL-MART!! LET'S GO!."
it's ALMOST as funny as the poorly-constructed vegetarian jokes that have been coming at me for about 7 years now.
JUST ALMOST!!
(Wondering why I boycott Wal-Mart? Read previous post entitled "Blame game, Blame game, who is to blame?" OR watch this amazing documentary to get the fuller version. and PLEASE enjoy all the other videos in the side columns.)
i disgress... Here we go.... Back to my point.... what were we talking about??? Snookie on the cover of Rolling Stone??
OH RIGHT!! I forgot.. I don't give a FUCK! (but apparently it's more important than the rolling waves of revolution that might end up changing history as we know it.)
Right. so.....
1. HUNGER STRIKES

This dame: Alice Paul
Who:
leader of the National Woman's Party (NWP)
What:
1. DEMANDED (not pleaded) for women's right to vote
2. Led first nonviolent civil disobedience campaign in front of white house that lasted 18months with 1,000 women.

October 20, 1917- ALICE PAUL ARRESTED AND SENTENCED TO 7 MONTHS IN PRISON
Her reaction? Hunger strike!! Lasted 22 days
THEY'RE REACTION?

Force fed Alice and other women 3 times a day for 3 weeks straight
details: tube through nose and mouth, pumping food into their stomachs.
AMERICA'S REACTION?
LIVID!! newspapers couldn't get enough of it.

END RESULT:
1.November 17- Suffragist released because of public pressure
2.President Wilson FINALLY announces his support for the suffrage movement
3.June 4, 1917- Senate Passes 19th Amendment, women's right to vote
Conclusion: SUCCESS
Information: Woman in History
2. BOYCOTT

These guys: Ezell A Blair, Jr, Franklin E. McCain, Joseph A. McNeil, David L. Richmond
Who:
Four BLACK college students at Greensboro, North Carolina AT&T college (not the phone service! Agricultural and Technical College)
what:

1.Performed a nonviolent sit-in at an all-white cafe named Woolworth on February 1, 1960
2. Inspired by this, people in other Southern states started to perform the same form of protest, overcrowding some places so much that NOBODY COULD PURCHASE GOODS FROM THE STORE.
a. not only sit-ins, but boycotts
THEY'RE REACTION:

whites reacted poorly, blacks maintained civility. Often, the students would sit quietly and read for their next day's schooling.
(stay with me here)
END RESULT:
-Woolworth breaks down and starts to serve the blacks. Many more city cafes followed suit.
-This sparked a civil rights movement that eventually led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, desegregating public facilities.
CONCLUSION: SUCCESS
ok uummm i think that's enough... digest this for now.
Coming soon: My very own hybrid of the two. It will probably look something like this...

ok ok it will not look ANYTHING like that... however, that IS a real animal!!
Here is the story

Summary:
-NATO is hunting down insurgents and end up killing 9 boys, ranging from age 7 to 9. SEVEN TO NINE!!! Collecting wood for their family....
-NOT THE FIRST TIME! "tribal elders there claimed NATO forces killed more than 50 civilians in recent air and ground strikes."
Solution???????
Gen. David. Petraeus, the top commander of U.S. and international troops in Afghanistan, ordered a debrief of attack helicopters on who to and NOT to shoot....

It's a natural process. Sometimes you just gotta say,
"HEY! I'M SICK OF YOU BENDING ME OVER AND SPANKING ME BARE ASS, GOVERNMENT!! WE'RE THROUGH!"

F-22 Raptor: only the 2nd most expensive fighter jet at $350 million.
If only DETROIT had one of these! They could just sell it to Isreal and be MMOONNEEYY
What is the most expensive, do you ask???? I never thought you would!!!
Get 'em while they're hot, boys and girls!! With just 3 easy payments of 8 million dollars, you can have your very ownnnnn
for the very very low price of $2.4 billion
it's the B-2 SPIRIT!!
However, due to funding, the American military ONLY made 21 of them. So supplies are limited.

Blame game, Blame game, Who is to Blame?
Full article here.So here we have Chipotle firing illegal immigrants because of the crackdown we've been having on the poor "untouchables." I can say that. I am Mexican. My entire family worked their way through this system my being the "untouchables" of society: the cooks, the dishwashers, the maids, the fast food workers, etc. Ok so fine. We can SAY that they are taking jobs away from the 9%+ of people unemployed that are LEGALLY here.
BUT if we are going to start playing the blame game, there's PLENTY more we can talk about that makes illegal immigrants look like chump change in comparison.

Wal-Mart:
So far, more than 70% of the commodities sold in Wal-Mart are Made in China.
Last year, the firm bought $15 billion products from China, half from direct purchasing, the other from the firm's suppliers in China.
More than 5,000 Chinese enterprises have established steady supply alliances with Wal-Mart

the White House announced $45 billion in new trade deals with China, including
a $19 billion deal with Boeing and a package with GE expected to generate more $2 billion in U.S. exports.
Some economists say the deals will hurt U.S. efforts to end the jobless Great Recession.

YYYUUUUMMM!!! Don't get me wrong, i love cheese. But this is just showing how sometimes you need to know who is behind the scenes to really understand what's going on, who's holding the strings and what their motives are.

This guy Maslow ova heeeeeya (said in strong NY accent)
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Chart

BEWARE: LONG POST. But it's worth it.
Anyone hear of this guy? If you have, this is going to be an overview, so sit back and remember!!
for the "have-nots," sit down and shut up!! no but really, listen up, this could change your life...
sidenote: i remember learning about this guy back in my earlier years of college and I guess I stored it in a part of my brain that used it but never realized it.
Long story short, this guy is BA (thank you brother.. Bad Ass) and I think it's worth knowing that even though he created it back in the 40s, it still holds truth and strength today
ANYWAY:
We start at the bottom of this pyramid and work our way up. And with every level we start with......
1. Physiological Needs: Here we're looking at the basics:
-Air
-Water
-Food
-Sleep
ANYWAY:
We start at the bottom of this pyramid and work our way up. And with every level we start with......
WHAT DO WE NEED??
-Air
-Water
-Food
-Sleep
**Can we all check these off our list?? If not, it's going to be a whole different kind of post. So for the sake of getting on with this, we're going to assume that everyone has the basics. REALLY look at this list, if you have these 4 things, you're already on your way!! Life doesn't seem all too bad now does it?? Damn Americans**
2. Safety Needs: This part of the pyramid is looking at the attempt to relieve yourself of daily threats such as:
-Do I live in a safe area?
-Is my job secure for me?
-Is my health ok? And if it is not, can I afford to fix the problem?
**So this is where it might start getting hazy for us. Our economy is low, our jobs are absolute shit, our food is now such shit that it might be the problem with our health. What do we do here? Again, a whole different post. But as a society, if the people cannot feel safe, they cannot move up the pyramid until this part is fixed. Think about how much time a parent thinks about providing for the family, 9-5 shit job, health insurance. Trying to focus on anything else seems miniscule compared to the worry of creating a safe environment for their family.**
3. Social Needs: Here is where we're looking at interactions with other people, including:
-Relationships with the opposite sex
-Friendship circles
-Finding a group you feel a part of
**Let's face it, we're not the kind of creatures that like to be alone for the most part. We do things together and like to know we are loved. And it's a vicious circle here: you don't feel loved because you feel threatened. You feel threatened because you don't feel loved. Round and Round. So get some love in your life!! And allow people to love you. The biggest problem I find in other people is their inability to drop their ego or guard and just let people LOVE them! (speaking from experience here)
4. Esteem Needs: I feel like everyone can improve on this, but I also feel that it takes both yourself and the people you surround yourself with in order to accomplish this level of need.
-Recognition from OTHERS
-Attention from OTHERS
-Feeling Accomplished (YOURSELF)
-Respecting YOURSELF
**Now here you have full power to choose who you surround yourself with and how you feel about yourself. This is where you start making your OWN goddamn decisions. You are what you eat? Well, you are also who you surround yourself with. Remember this.**
5. Self-Actualization: Enlightenment, Nirvana, call it what you want. This is where you go "holy shit! life is beautiful!" and "i now realize I know absolutely nothing"
-Wisdom
-Justice
-Truth
-Meaning
**I would like to say that I think I've gotten here. The problem with this stage though is once you're here, you realize you're never TRULY satisfied, but you're happy with what you have. Sounds weird, I know. But the more you learn, the more you realize you know nothing. But you are also so happy to be learning that you don't even care.
